Halloysite underwent a vinyl functionalization reaction and was then polymerized with vinyl imidazole, in conjunction with 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid. The tangling imidazole rings were converted into acidic ionic liquids by means of a reaction with chlorosulfuric acid.
