Fosfomycin is a bactericidal antibiotic, analogous to phosphoenolpyruvate, that exerts its activity by inhibiting the activity of MurA. This enzyme catalyzes the first step of peptidoglycan biosynthesis, the transfer of enolpyruvate from phosphoenolpyruvate to uridine-diphosphate-N-acetylglucosamine.
