Endothelial cell dysfunction is an early event in cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis. The origin of this dysfunction is unresolved, but accumulating evidence implicates damaging oxidants, including hypochlorous acid (HOCl), a major oxidant produced by myeloperoxidase (MPO), during chronic inflammation.
