Treatment of bacteria with salicylic acid, the plant hormone produced during immunity, reduced bacterial growth, decreased gene expression for methylglyoxal detoxification enzymes, and increased bacterial methylglyoxal concentrations in vitro. Increased methylglyoxal concentrations reduced bacterial reproduction.
