This carbohydrate-binding configuration, unlike any previously encountered, extends the collection of chitin-binding proteins. Cpl1, localized to the U. maydis cell wall, may cooperate with cell wall-degrading and -decorating proteins during the maize infection process. The presence of four surface-exposed loop regions within the structure of Cpl1 implies its possible participation in the spatial control of these proteins' interactions.
