Granite steps result in the higher backyard with a pond, decorative plantings and enclosed vegetable beds. Tricia and Bud collaborate on the garden initiatives, designing many of the gardens in order that they provide lovely views from the indoors, particularly in winter. Rather than trying to plant a backyard over the shallow, matted roots of mature bushes, the Haywards paved the world with bluestone and created a shady outside eating space.
